How to Use the UTM Builder
Create a tagged campaign URL in a few steps, then paste it into ads, email, social posts, or partner placements.
Start with the full page you want visitors to open, including https:// when possible.
Fill required fields and optionally add term, content, or a campaign ID for finer reporting.
Use the finished URL in the exact channel you want attributed — then track results in your analytics tool.
UTM Parameter Guide
Each parameter answers a different reporting question. Use the table below when you are unsure what to fill in.
* Provide a campaign name, a campaign ID, or both.
| Parameter | Required | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign sourceutm_source | Yes | Names the origin of the traffic — a search engine, newsletter, social network, partner site, or other referrer. | |
| Campaign mediumutm_medium | Yes | cpc | Describes the channel type, such as email, cost-per-click, social, referral, or banner. |
| Campaign nameutm_campaign | No* | spring_sale | Labels the product push, promo, or strategic initiative (for example a seasonal sale or product launch). |
| Campaign termutm_term | No | ai_article_writer | Optional. Often used for paid search keywords so you can see which terms led to the click. |
| Campaign contentutm_content | No | header_cta | Optional. Differentiates creatives or links that point to the same URL — ideal for A/B tests and ad variants. |
| Campaign IDutm_id | No* | spring_launch_2026 | Identifies a specific ads or promo campaign. Useful when you run many similar campaigns and need a stable ID in reports. |
UTM Tagging Best Practices
A few naming habits make campaign reports much easier to trust over time.
Prefer lowercase
Most analytics tools treat Facebook and facebook as different values. Stick to lowercase so reports stay clean and easy to filter.
Separate words with hyphens
Use hyphens instead of spaces (spring-sale, not spring sale). Spaces get encoded and make URLs harder to read and compare.
Only tag external inbound links
Apply UTMs on links from ads, email, social, and partner sites. Do not add UTMs to internal navigation — that can split sessions and muddy attribution.

Frequently Asked Questions
A UTM builder helps you add campaign parameters to a destination URL so analytics tools can show which source, medium, campaign, and creative brought someone to your site.
Website URL, campaign source, and campaign medium are required. You also need either a campaign name or a campaign ID (or both). Term and content are optional.
utm_source names where the click came from (google, newsletter, linkedin). utm_medium describes the channel type (cpc, email, social, banner). Together they answer “where” and “how.”
Use utm_campaign for a human-readable promotion name and utm_id when you need a stable campaign identifier. Many teams set both. This builder requires at least one of them.
Yes. Standard utm_* query parameters are widely supported. Your analytics platform can report on them as long as the visitor lands with those parameters in the URL.
Usually no. Query parameters are the reliable default. Fragment tagging is available for edge cases, but many setups do not treat hash parameters the same way.
No. Tag links that enter your site from ads, email, social, and other external channels. Internal UTMs can distort sessions and make campaign reports harder to trust.
Prefer lowercase letters and hyphens instead of spaces. Consistent naming (for example linkedin vs LinkedIn) keeps reports from splitting into duplicate rows.
Yes. BlogBuster can capture whitelisted UTM parameters from landing pages and associate them with signup events, so you can connect campaigns to conversions.
No. The URL is built entirely in your browser. Nothing you type in the builder is uploaded to BlogBuster servers.
